Carboxytherapy – A novelty in aesthetic medicine!

Carbon dioxide therapy (“miraculous gas”), or carboxytherapy, has been declared the greatest breakthrough in aesthetic medicine. No wonder, as the number of uses and the effectiveness of this method is impressive. This is a safe, minimally invasive and clinically proven method, used to rejuvenate the skin, fight cellulite, stretch marks, scars, local excess fat, skin laxity, alopecia, cardiovascular disorders. The treatment consists of a precise, intradermal or subcutaneous injection of controlled doses of carbon dioxide (CO2).


Pure CO2 is injected into the subcutaneous tissue through a small needle. It penetrates easily the surrounding tissues. CO2 induces a strong expansion of the small blood vessels and formation of new capillaries. Increases blood flow, oxygen and nutrients to the administered area and improves microcirculation and cell renewal. Skin reaction to CO2 injection is stimulated by collagen, which results in increased elasticity. In addition, the increased amount of carbon dioxide affects reduction of oxygen binding capacity of the hemoglobin, so that the hemoglobin eagerly leaves oxygen in the tissue. The high content of the compound also causes formation of new blood vessels, which leads to long-term improvement of blood circulation and oxygenation of the tissues. Carbon dioxide converts into carbonic acid in the adipose tissue, which damages adipose cells and causes them to diminish. Thus, increasing carbon dioxide levels activates several mechanisms aimed at rapid delivery of larger amounts of oxygen to the area. The combination of mechanical tissue breakdown (gas penetration) and its chemical influence on the skin makes carboxytherapy one of the most promising skin revitalization techniques.

How long does the treatment last?

Typically, the treatment cycle consists of 5 to 10 treatments. Usually one or two treatments are performed per week. The procedure lasts from a few to several minutes.

Stretch marks are stripes most commonly occuring on the skin of thighs, abdomen, buttocks and breasts. The causes of stretch marks are as follows: hormonal factors, significant weight gain in a short time, pregnancy, genetic factors and dysfunction of connective tissue. Stretch marks are caused by excessive stretching of the skin and breakage of the collagen fibers. To date, no method has been developed to effectively remove these changes. The most effective technique is carbon dioxide treatment which, with optimal conditions and co-operation, is able to reduce visibility of stretch marks by up to 80%. Carboxytherapy improves the process of neovascularization (formation of new blood vessels), which results in a significant improvement in blood supply. The aforementioned implies more efficient skin pigmentation (which consequently darkens the colour of the stretch marks to the correct color of the skin). Increased collagen synthesis, induced by CO2 stratification, influences levelling of altered areas. Carboxytherapy is the only available treatment both in the fight against old and new stretch marks, and brings noticeable improvement of the skin, regardless of its color and shade. Carboxytherapy helps to create new collagen and then “thickens” and elasticises the skin in order to improve its appearance.


Any interference into the skin structure leads to formation of a scar. Scar is a natural, last step in the healing process of the wound. However, before a scar occurs, the affected area must pass through the inflammatory phase when the wound is skinned over and the proliferative phase – during which the skin is reinforced by freshly produced collagen fibers. These two phases usually last two up to three weeks. Subsequently, the scar “ripens”, its structure undergoes rebuilding in order to give the skin greatest possible strength. Treatment of fresh scars is not recommended. The skin must first be healed, so that the inflammation disappears. Treatment can be started about 2-3 weeks after healing of the wound. Carboxytherapy brings effects in treatment of scars, e.g. after cesarean section or removal of appendicitis.
